Worship with us

Our Worship Services

As a community we gather together regularly to celebrate the Gospel of God's love for us as we pray, we sing, we reflect on Scripture, and we dine at Jesus' table in Holy Communion.

Currently our services are as follows:

  • Sunday 08:30 Eucharist Service - A "low church" Eucharist Service following the 1989 "An Anglican Prayer Book." The Junior Church meet every two weeks during the service so check the Calendar to see the dates when Junior Church are meeting. Tea and coffee are shared twice a month after services and the dates when tea and coffee are going to be shared are also on the calendar on the Home page.

  • Stirling Lodge Service - A once a month midweek service at 09:45 on a Wednesday at Stirling Lodge Retirement home.

  • Midweek Services - Occasionally we also hold weekday services to celebrate or commemorate events during the Liturgical year. The dates and times for these services for a given month are shared on the calendar on the Home page.

FAQ about our services

Our Service Style

If you are visiting St Michael's or an Anglican church for the first time we understand that for some it might come as a bit of a culture shock so below we've tried to explain what you can expect when visiting us.

  • Here at St Michael's we follow a typically "low church" Anglican tradition of liturgical worship. (We don't quite make use of all the "bells and smells" though our priests do typically wear full vestments.)

  • When you arrive at the church for a service you will be greeted by one of the ushers and then you can take a seat in any of the pews. The ushers are also there to help if you have any questions.

  • All of our services follow the outline of the 1989 "An Anglican Prayer Book" and the liturgy is projected onto the large screen so that everyone can follow along. The "Liturgy" refers to the work and service of the church but in layman's terms it is essentially the order of service made up of the various calls & responses, prayers, and hymns/choruses.

  • During the service the congregation is led through the components of the liturgy by the priest, lay minister, and worship leader. The congregation takes its lead from these service leaders.

  • Music at St Michael's takes the form of both traditional & contemporary hymns and choruses.

  • Don't be too concerned about how to dress to attend services. Some people are more formal and others a little more relaxed, all that matters is that you here.

  • We are increasingly sharing tea and coffee after the service and all visitors and members of the congregation are invited to join us for tea and a chat.

Receiving Communion

We welcome all baptised Christians regardless of their denomination affiliation or age along with members of the congregation to receive communion. Communion can be taken in either one kind (consecrated wafers only) or both kinds (consecrated wafers and wine) as each person feels comfortable. Anyone wishing to receive communion in both kinds may receive the consecrated wine from the common chalice or by intinction (dipping the wafer into the wine) from a separate chalice by following the guidance of the celebrant and/or indicating their preference to the chalice bearer. Consecrated grape juice is also available from a separate chalice for anyone who prefers not to take wine and for any children who receive communion.

If you are unsure about receiving communion you are welcome to come up with the congregation and receive a blessing from the priest. If you would like to just receive a blessing you can keep your arms down and bow your head when approaching the priest. It is also acceptable to make a Spiritual Communion without the physical Sacrament but still be certain that Christ comes to us in this way as surely as He does in the Sacrament.

If anyone would like to receive communion but has trouble coming up to the altar rail, the priest can bring communion to you in the pew. Just indicate this to one of the ushers or the lay minister before the start of the service so that they can let the priest know.

Tithing and the Collection

A Collection is typically taken up at the service as we consider this part of our worship. During the "Offertory" before the communion, Collection Bags are passed around during a song or hymn while the priest(s) prepare the Lord's table for communion. Before the start of the service Collection Bags are placed at the back of the church at the Usher's table and any contributions may be placed in the bag before the service. Labeled Collection plates may also be placed onto the Ushers table for specific causes that we're collecting for.

Very importantly, having said that one is under any obligation to give towards the Collection as giving in this way is entirely voluntary.

Junior Church & Youth

We believe that youth and children are a vital part of God’s church. We endeavour to create a safe, joyful and evangelistic environment in which our children can grow in character and in relationship with God. With this in mind we do the following:

Host a fortnightly gathering (see the calendar) of our children and teenagers during the Sunday morning service. The children typically participate in the opening Praise and Penitence with the whole congregation before adjourning to the hall for a time of teaching, play and discussion, where after they re-join the congregation for Holy Communion.

We typically welcome all baptised children to receive communion, at the discretion of their parents. The Junior Church aims at providing regular, annual teaching about the meaning and practice of Holy Communion.

Dedicated Giving

Our God is a loving and generous God. We respond to that love in our worship, prayer, ministry and giving.

The ministry and service of St Michael's is dependent on “dedicated giving” funds from its parishioners and other monetary gifts. Dedicated Giving is an intentional commitment to support the ministry of the Church financially and is an essential part of the annual planning and budgeting for the church. Through Dedicated Giving, pledges can be made to support particular ministries in the church or just as a general pledge.

Contributions can be paid by EFT directly into St Michaels's bank account or by placing cash in a Dedicated Giving envelope in the collection bag on Sundays. Occasional donations are always received with gratitude.

For more details about Dedicated Giving or to receive an application form contact our office.

Please note that Dedicated Giving is done through a system of confidentiality with each person receiving a DG number corresponding with their pledge. Also importantly, the Dedicated Giving form merely records your intention and is not binding in any way.
